Narrative Therapy Model

Resources: Books and Resources for this Week An Introduction to MFT Systems Theory and Foundational Models External Learning Tool   Combs, G., & Freedman, J. (2016). Narrative therapy’s relational understanding of identity. Family Process, 55(2), 211-224. Link   Northcentral University. (2017). Narrative therapy I [Video file]. External Learning Tool   Northcentral University. (2017). Narrative therapy II [Video file]. External Learning Tool   Northcentral University. (2017). Narrative therapy III [Video file]. External Learning Tool   Vancouver Schools for Narrative Therapy (VSNT). (n.d.). Link After watching the videos in the resource section, write a reflection paper. In your reflection paper, be sure to address each of the following. Integrate theoretical information specific to this model that you found in your readings. Introduce narrative family therapy. Identify the primary contributors, and then, explain the context of the theorists at that time (e.g., place, background, interests). Comment on the therapeutic relationship. Explain the methods therapists use to separate the person from the problem. How do they thicken the family story to enrich its narrative? Identify and describe model interventions that you saw in these client interactions in the videos. Explore how social constructionist therapists work to stabilize, normalize, and create acceptance in clients as methods of solving the concerns of clients. They also focus on strengths and resiliency. Cite at least two or more examples, in detail, where you witnessed this strategy. What would be your systemic hypothesis regarding the couple in the video? Determine how you could apply mental health recovery concepts to the cases in the videos. Support your assignment with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included. Length: 5-7 pages, not including title and reference pages Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Created by Michael White and David Epston, Narrative Therapy is founded on systems theory and social constructionism. Narrative therapy holds that people develop narratives/stories to make sense of their lives. These narratives are influenced by culture and family. To move beyond the problem, clients need a new story. The narrative therapist meets the client as separate from the problem and helps the client understand that they are not the problem; the problem is the problem. The narrative therapist explores the client’s story of the problem, and together, they create a more strength-based, positive story. Narrative therapists take a non-hierarchical, collaborative position with clients in the session. This week, you will learn many useful assumptions and strategies associated with the narrative model including externalization of the problem, mapping the influence of the problem, and identifying unique outcomes.

Designing Mixed Methods Research

Discussion: Designing Mixed Methods Research Mixed methods research designs refer to a set of designs that purposively mix or integrate both qualitative data and quantitative data. As with quantitative research and qualitative research, the choice to use mixed methods research is influenced by the researcher’s philosophical orientation. This week’s readings provide an overview of various types of mixed methods research designs. As with previous discussions on design, the selection of the most appropriate mixed design is guided by the study’s purpose and research questions and/or hypotheses. The choice of design links the research questions and/or hypotheses to the data that will be collected achieving alignment among research components. In this Discussion, you will explore the basics of mixed methods research designs, calling upon your growing understanding of both quantitative and qualitative research. With these thoughts in mind: By Day 4 Post your response to the question, “To what extent is mixed methods research simply taking a quantitative design and a qualitative design and putting them together?” Next, explain the types of research questions best served by mixed methods research. Then, explain one strength and one limitation of mixed methods research. Finally, provide a rationale for or against the utility of mixed methods research in your discipline.
